Biography

Personal Architectural Philosophy:

"Architecture should be created for individuals to live and work, in an environment that makes people feel good about themselves, their work, and provides a natural connection and extension to the site they have chosen."

Registration:

Michael Rust is currently registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona, and California, but has provided design work to several clients in other states as a designer. Currently most states do not require a licensed architect within the state to design residential and small commercial structures. If licensing is required, Michael Rust, can provide this requirement through other Taliesin trained architects, he has worked with in the past.

Education:

Michael Rust came to join the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in 1982 after three years at the Sinclair Community College, in Dayton Ohio. During his training at Taliesin, Michael Rust trained with several architects who were trained directly by Frank Lloyd Wright. Some of these people were William Wesley Peter, (the first student of Frank Lloyd Wright and President of Taliesin Architects after Frank Lloyd Wrights death) and John Rattenbury, student of Frank Lloyd Wright and author of "A Living Architecture" Michael Rust worked for over 9 years as John Rattenbury's apprentice and worked on over 300 projects all over the world, including custom homes, golf course clubhouses, office building, and resorts hotels including renovation of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix Arizona.

In 1989, Michael Rust was the third person to receive an accredited degree from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. In 1990, Michael Rust was the youngest person to be asked to join the staff of The Taliesin Senior Fellowship. Michael Rust was an instructor for several workshops and classes offered to the apprentices at The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architect.

Experience:

After 12 years of training at The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and the last four years as on site project architect for a 76,000 sf, original design of Frank Lloyd Wright located on the island of Maui, Michael Rust starts a private Architectural Design Practice in Tempe, Arizona known as RDS (Rust Design Studio).

In 1993, RDS is founded as another division of Nesco Mfg. Inc, headed by Steven R. Coultrap. Nesco is a multi-divisional architectural specialty manufacturing facility, licensed subcontractor for installation of products they make and now an Architectural design division all located in one company.

As head architect for RDS, Michael Rust, not only provided custom designs for residential and commercial projects for several clients but was actively involved as project manager for large subcontractor design and installation projects contracted by Nesco Mfg. Inc. These projects included the installation of over 85,000 square feet of manufactured stone veneer at Desert Mountain, the creation of 5 large sculptural domes for Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino located south of Phoenix and the design and fabrication of custom stage screens for Embassy Suites Hotel in Scottsdale. This experience as being a sub-contractor has given Michael Rust the experience and knowledge of working with large general contractors of high pressure construction projects that many architects only wish they could get in school.

After being engaged by Taliesin Architects to provide several custom residential designs and complicated technical documents projects for clients of Taliesin Architects, Taliesin Architects negotiated the purchased RDS and the current CEO of Taliesin Architects named Michael Rust the new Director of Residential Design.

A New Beginning in an old place:

In November in 1998, Michael Rust along with his staff begins a new era of providing professional services in architecture, master planning and interior design for Taliesin Architects Ltd. Michael Rust and staff completes the designs and documents of several custom homes and commercial projects, based on continuing the practice of "Organic Architecture, established by Frank Lloyd Wright.
